Vehicle Description

1950 Mercury Eight For Sale This 1950 Mercury Eight is a traditional-style custom built on the factory chassis, following the formula that made the 1949 to 1951 Mercury the definitive American lead sled. The chop is subtle rather than severe, the body has been smoothed rather than restyled, and the whole car reads as a period-informed custom that someone can actually drive. It is finished in 1957 Chevrolet Tawny Rose, a soft pink that suits the Merc's rounded bodywork without tipping into caricature. Power comes from a 383 small-block Chevrolet topped with an Edelbrock intake manifold, backed by a TH350 three-speed automatic and 3.54 gears out back. This is a well-proven combination and a sensible one for a car of this weight: the 383's added stroke gives it low-end torque that a 350 has to work for, the TH350 keeps the driveline compact and serviceable, and the 3.54 ratio favors acceleration and around-town driving over long-legged highway cruising. Braking has been updated with front discs, with drums retained at the rear. The car sits 3 inches lower on the factory frame, which keeps the original chassis intact while getting the body down where a Merc is supposed to sit. The custom work is concentrated in the details rather than the profile. The door handles are shaved and the doors open via electric poppers, and the glass was installed from the inside so the body could be left free of exterior reveal moldings. That is a labor-intensive choice, and it is the kind of thing that separates a finished custom from a quick one. Inside is white leather paired with a Lecarra steering wheel and a set of VDO instruments covering water temperature, oil pressure, volts, tachometer, and speedometer. A Sony radio handles audio and Vintage Air air conditioning makes the car usable in summer heat, which is where a lot of otherwise well-built customs fall short. The odometer currently shows 5,400 miles. Taken together, this is a restrained, carefully finished take on the car that started the genre, built to be shown and driven rather than trailered.
